Waste management and disposal is a problem of increasing global importance.
Urbanization and increased consumption have inevitably resulted in increased wastes and at the same time, uninhabited areas in which to setup dumps are becoming increasingly rare. Furthermore disposal sites, even though operating costs are not significant, involve wastage of materials that could be partially reused. Lastly, large concentrations of wastes may prove harmful to the surrounding environment.
An alternative to disposal sites is the use of incinerators which, by burning the waste, recuperate a fraction of the energy from combustion, and transform it into electricity. However, the yield is not high and there is the problem caused by the emission of combustion residues into the atmosphere.
It seems increasingly clear that the way to go is the recover and reutilize wastes through mechanical treatment to obtain raw and finished processed materials. This opens up a market where small and medium-sized businesses recuperate raw and semi-processed materials from waste and sell them, thereby placing them back into the goods production cycle.
